Walt graduated from Merchantville High School and then attended Valley Forge Military Academy. He then transferred to Rutgers University and obtained a BS in Marketing and Economics. He lived in the Pennsauken area most of his life being active as a coach in PYAA for many years. His family is one of the original members of the Woodbine and Meadowbrook swim club. He is currently a resident in the Chadwyck II section of Pennsauken. He is an avid offshore saltwater fisherman and he is also active in the Pennsauken community.
